What are "One Deal A Day" Sites?
Wikipepia notes that One deal A Day is a web-based business model in which a single type of product is offered for sale for a period of 24 hours. Certain sites sell items uniquely by this method. Other established retailers, such as Amazon.com and Buy.com feature a "deal a day" item in addition to more conventional sales methods.
The concept originated on the internet with the launching of Woot.com in July 2004. By late 2006, it had exploded, with more than 100 deal-a-day sites in existence. The products sold primarily include geek toys, such as USB powered gadgets or computer peripherals. Goods sold may also be in the form of coupons redeemable at other sites. Since fast delivery and local knowledge is key to this business, sites tend to operate on specific geographic territories.
The Infomercial Connection
Deal a day sites often borrow the format and sales techniques from the long-established world of infomercials and direct response television. Infomercials started in the early 1950s, but exploded in the 1980's following deregulation. Typical elements of the format include real-time transaction processing, actual or perceived limited stock availablilty, and the sale of inexpensive, mass-produced items.The deal-a-day format typically doesn't have an advertising component. It is transactional, the emphasis being to shift product immediately, as opposed to establish brand or generate product awareness.
The History Of OneDay.co.nz
This site, Oneday.co.nz was one of the very first one day deals sites in New Zealand. You can see a screen capture showing how this domain looked way back in late 2004/early 2005.
A few years later, many johnny-come-latelys launched similar sites, presumably recognising a good idea when they saw it! These days, a plethora of sites based on the "Deal A Day" model compete with one another, featuring time-limited special offers. Of course, this idea is nothing new, as one day sales have been a mainstay of retailing since retailing began.
This new oneday.co.nz site was relaunched in December of 2006. It publishes information and links to sites that offer one day deals, one day sales, deep discounts, coupons, online specials and other bargains. Obviously, we do not sell anything, but if you want to keep an eye on those who do, then you can do so here - all in one place! We aggregate 'em, making it easier for you to seek out all the best deals!
